Head study

Had a good time tonight in my figure drawing class. We are focusing on the head and so tonight was a 3 hour long pose. I’m pretty happy with it and so I thought I’d share.

Oh, and by the way, I entered the drawing that I did a couple weeks ago (below) in a student figure drawing show and won third place!

Paper Cut Crab in the Deep Blue Sea

The assignment in my Drawing for Animation class was to make an image from the Deep Sea emulating the style of illustrator Charly Harper. Once I looked at this style what I noticed, besides the breaking things down to simple shapes, was the textures, and that made me think of 3D paper cut art and so that’s the direction I took. I don’t think this would be mistaken for Charly Harper art, but I kinda like it. With a little more time I would have liked to have tried to do this in Maya so that it might look a little better, but instead it’s all in Photoshop.

Monster in my closet

Here’s a fun little project I just turned in. This was for my Drawing for Animation class. We were supposed to focus on shape and design something that could work as a toy also. The theme was “Monster in the Closet.” I’m thinking it might be fun to make a little short out of it someday.

[UPDATE - Feb. 6, 2012] – I’d like to start participating in Illustration Friday again and I thought that this fit the subject “Suspense” for this week. So here you go!

If you have bears to hug, hug them now.

Here’s my Illustration Friday entry for this week. I was in a meeting this morning and thinking about the theme for the week and this is what I came up with for the topic “Forgotten”.

This is perhaps the saddest thing I’ve experienced with my kids growing up. I think I get more attached to their toys than they do. Whenever I see my daughter’s favorite bear from when she was 3 lying around (she’s now 8), I always have to pick him up and put him on his comfy spot on the bed. I think that Jessie the Cowgirl’s song in Toy Story 2 really affected me.

I thought I’d also include the sketch from this morning. I tried to blacken the lines with my pencil before scanning it so I didn’t have to redraw the lines in Illustrator. I kind of like the way it turned out so I may try to do it that way more often because it was much faster.

Dragon Bookworm

I was in a meeting this morning and doodled this:

I’m probably going to be experimenting with different kinds of dragons in the near future because I’m building a site/blog for my oldest daughter (10 yrs) to use to make up stories about her dragon hunting adventures, so I’m going to be working on the illustrations for it. It should be fun!

I think what I’ll do is draw a random dragon and have her make up a story around it and post it. I’ve registered two domains, but just have them pointing to my own site right now. They are www.dragonfarmer.com and www.dragonhannah.com. I’m not sure which domain will be used as the main one. Her character’s name is to be Hannah (not her real name).

Here’s a picture of her character. She’s on the right. Her younger sister’s character, Emma, is on the left.
